I spend too much money when I go to any store and my dad is starting to yell at me. Please help.
It’s easy to spend too much money. Stores are set up to entice you to buy their goods, but, you can resist the temptation to spend too much money.
Here are a few ideas:
- Shop only when you really need to buy something. Shopping just for fun, known as recreational shopping, can cause you to overspend and end up with impulse buys—things you don’t really need or want.
- Only shop with cash. People who use credit cards tend to spend almost 1/3 more than people who pay with cash. That means if you usually spend $10 with cash, you’d probably spend $15 if you use a credit card.
- Make a list and shop from it. This can help you avoid impulse buys.
- Make it harder to impulse buy—leave your credit card or your parent’s credit card at home. This way you have to think about whether or not you really want the item. If you like it enough, you can to go back and get it.
You certainly don’t want your dad or anyone else to be upset because of your spending. So, if any of the above options could work for you, talk them over with your dad and develop a plan that works for both of you.
